JC5 Gearbox Billet End Cover

The casing in the area around the outer bearings in the JC5 gearbox is a weak spot and can crack in high performance applications. 

We have designed this billet cover to minimise the risk of any cracking in the end of the casing.  The gearbox case has minimal material removed to create a 5 degree taper around the bearings.  The billet cover has a corresponding 5 degree taper which is a very tight fit on the gearbox casing, pulling the bearing housings together when bolted down onto the gearbox case.

The billet cover is very robust and has very thick sides to add a lot of strength into the case.  The downside is that it weighs 2kg, but we think it's worth the additional weight!

We have tried to minimise the cost of these covers but this is one of the most challenging projects we have undertaken and as such the prototyping costs were high.  We feel the cost is well worth it to minimise catastrophic failure of the gearbox case that often wrecks many of the internals of the gearbox, and also wrecks your race weekend or trackday! 

This fits with standard gears, and also our dog engagement kits.

If you want to undertake the machining yourself, please order the cover only and we will supply you with a suitable 3D CAD model that can be used with appropriate CAM software to replicate the taper yourself.

Fitting is simple, just requiring loctite bearing fit to be placed on the gearbox and cover tapers, with a suitable sealant placed on the flat flange that mates with the gearbox.  We use Loctite 518 for flange sealing.

When you need to remove the cover, heat up the area with the taper to soften the loctite and use a screwdriver in the slots provided to lever the cover off the gearbox case.
